Cadavre Exquis

October 29 – January 18, 2019
Phi Centre, Montreal

Paul McCarthy

Passed from hand to hand, circling around the room, a sheet of paper, folded in on itself to conceal the previous pencil stroke, is gradually filled with fragments of information. This collective creation, ascribed to the unconscious, produces poetic and dream-like compositions. The Surrealists called it cadavre exquis.
Moving beyond paper to virtual reality, the exhibition gathers individual contributions from compelling artists of our time. Marina Abramović, Olafur Eliasson, Laurie Anderson, Antony Gormley, Koo Jeong A, Paul McCarthy, Hsi-Chien Huang, have taken the leap into exploring immersive mediums as an extension of their practice.
The result is an uncanny and fascinating narrative that is open to interpretation. As we experience shared impulses and thoughts of all humankind, alchemy operates. We glimpse bizarre and captivating worlds as seen through the lens of contemporary artists.
